November Error Correction

In the November Issue of Kidz Magazine, the Project Peace essay on page 6 was credited inaccurately. The excellent essay, “Making the World a Safer and Saner Place,” was written by Idil Franko.
What Kids Can Do to Build a More Tolerant World

Our world has many social problems. Every day, we hear stories about intolerance, hatred, violence and terrorism. Through an integrated English and Music project, students from the Izmir SEV Elementary School in Turkey have started to bring peace to our world in a small way. The following essay was assigned in the Grade 7 Final Exam, May 2006. Students were provided with the introduction and conclusion (the first and last paragraph) and they had to create the “body.”

Directed and Produced by Izmir SEV Elementary School teacher Cedric M. Thompson, in collaboration with Brian McAuley in Izmir, Turkey

“Making the World a Safer & Saner Place”

People have been working quite hard to solve the environmental problems of the world. Today, we reduce, recycle and reuse. Unfortunately, we have many social problems which still need to be solved. Our world is full of violence, hatred and intolerance. “Project Peace” is a short musical which tried to teach kids about how to create a more tolerant world. Even though there are no black-and-white answers to all of our social problems, the songs offer some suggestions for creating a more peaceful world.
One of the songs in “Project Peace” is “Lay Down Your Arms.” It is about the violence that we have in our world. It tells us that we should stop fighting because all it will do is harm us. We should understand that we are all the same; we all breathe and we all have blood in our veins. The problem is that we don’t understand that, and when we are born we think that diversity is bad. We have seen, and we are still seeing, examples of countries fighting because of their different religions and colors. Millions of people get killed because of this. Shedding tears is not enough – we should put our guns away. That’s the message of the song.
Ever heard the expression, “Monkey see, monkey do?” Well, that’s what the song “Be Good to Your Kid” is all about. Parents act in a certain way, and kids are affected by this behavior. If kids see their parents drinking and taking pills when things get heavy, that is what they’ll do too! If they see violence, they’ll probably resort to violence too. As a 13-year-old, I am also affected by the way my parents act. They say that children are careful observers. I agree. We imitate, and our young heads are like cameras - ready to take pictures. If parents hate life, children will end up negative too. Parents need to tell us that we can succeed and encourage us. They need to make us believe that life isn’t so bad after all. That way we can start believing in ourselves and stand on our own feet. Instead of showing the bruises that they have, parents should celebrate the good experiences that they’ve had.
The song that impressed me most was “Gotta Say Stop.” It is about our life being ruled by TV channels which show lots of violence and make us believe that that is right. We become desensitized, lose our disgust and hardly get disturbed. We grow up to be the starters of war, instead of those trying to end adversity.
A few years ago, our oceans were very polluted, our forests almost destroyed and the earth’s ozone layer almost depleted. For the most part, we have begun to solve some of the earth’s environmental problems. It is now time to begin solving some of our social problems. Let’s start today, and let it begin with me. In the words of our beloved Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, “Peace at home, peace in the world!” Or, using the title of a recent pop song, “Shalom, Salaam, Peace.”
